Fluency Assessment  

These pages will time a student while they read a grade level passage for one minute.

Take note of where the student stops reading when the alert appears.

Good readers in first and second grade should be reading approximately 60-80 words per minute, third graders should be reading about 70-90 words a minute, and fourth and fifth graders should be reading above 90 words per minute.

While comprehension is certainly more important than reading speed, children with slow reading speed will have more difficulty reading increasingly difficult grade level texts.
