Reading Remedies
Word Attack Activities

First, review the sounds of vowel combinations with students so that they know them without thinking. It's best not to try to teach them all at once. Pick a few a day and slowly add more.

Next, teach students to break words apart by finding the vowel combinations in a word and breaking the word into as many parts as there are vowel combinations.

Finally, teach students to recognize common prefixes and suffixes in the English language (lists follow). If students can identify and correctly read prefixes and suffixes in words, they will be able to read longer words much more quickly because there will be less of the word left to decode.
