Segmenting Activities |
|
Students need to work their way up to segmenting complex words. If students are unable to segment, try these steps.
Start by asking them to isolate the beginning sounds in words. For example, what's the first sound in cat? What's the first sound in fan?
Next, ask students to isolate the final sound. What's the last sound in cart? What's the last sound in train?
Finally, ask students to isolate the medial (vowel) sound. What's the middle sound in cat? What's the middle sound in fin?
Once students can identify the beginning, middle, and ending sounds you can take their phonemic awareness a step further by asking them to replace sounds in words. Change the /c/ in cat to /f/.
